Hemorrhoids can be very painful and the bleeding is uncomfortable. A hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure, but this treatment is usually not the first option selected. There are conservative measures that are usually attempted first. However, if the conservative measures are not enough, you'll likely need a hemorrhoidectomy. 

The Risk of a Hemorrhoid

Not only are hemorrhoids uncomfortable, but they can also cause permanent damage if they are not treated promptly. When this happens, your doctor will usually recommend surgery. If you are bleeding considerably and are in pain, this is a common sign that you should undergo hemorrhoid surgery. If your hemorrhoid symptoms do not improve, you will more likely be in need of hemorrhoidectomy surgical procedure. 

More Conservative Treatments

Before surgery, your doctor will likely recommend other procedures such as banding. Banding treats internal hemorrhoids and involves the use of a rubber band that cuts off circulation to the hemorrhoid. While you won't experience pain from this procedure, you might experience mild discomfort or pressure. 

Your doctor may recommend the use of chemicals that can shrink the hemorrhoid and can cause it to stop bleeding. Your doctor delivers the chemical through a shot and you will experience little or no pain from the shot. Your doctor may be able to freeze or burn off the hemorrhoid if it is somewhat more extreme.

When You Need to Undergo Surgery

When you undergo a hemorrhoid surgery, the inflamed tissue is cut off surgically. A common situation is when you are prolapsed, which means that the hemorrhoid will stick out of the anal opening. In some cases, you may not be able to push the hemorrhoid back into the anus. Under these circumstances, it's more likely that you will need surgery.

Your surgeon will cut out the large hemorrhoid and you will then spend time in the hospital in the recovery room where you'll be observed. You will be able to return home once the surgical team has determined that your vital signs are stable. 

Why Your Hemorrhoid Can Protrude

A hemorrhoid is a vein in the anus that swells. Unfortunately, the vein can swell so much that the hemorrhoid protrudes out of the anus. It is the most painful outcome of having hemorrhoids. They are usually the most painful when you're sitting down or when you are having a bowel movement. But there is no reason to continue to suffer through this, and a surgeon can treat it.
